Product Description
Planeta DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Our oil
Extra-virgin olive oil is, together with wine, the other great family passion. The large olive grove at Capparrina, at Menfi, relates the history of our love for this product, together with that of our commitment to safeguarding the countryside and nature.
The oldest maps of Ulmo show that already half a century ago olives were cultivated on our land, in one of the areas best known for the production of olive oil. Our family has always been linked to this product which so forcefully represents Sicily and the Mediterranean.
At Capparrina we planted our olive grove to ensure that the coast at Menfi should remain free of buildings for ever, placing once more the protection of the countryside above the interests of family and business.
Today we care for 98 hectares of olives which descend the hill towards the white beach of Porto Palo of Menfi, 19 times Blue and Green Flags, in a context of great biodiversity in which rare examples of flora and fauna co-exist.
Through our olive oil we are happy to contribute to consolidating and diffusing the culture of quality extra-virgin olive oil, in the kitchen and on the table.

Planeta DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil – this extra virgin olive oil from award winning winemakers Planeta in Sicily deserves its reputation as one of the finest quality oils on the market today and is one of our favourites. It is emerald green coloured with the scent of fresh herbs, with touches of citrus, artichoke, pistachio and green tomato.
Planeta DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil has acquired the recognition “D.O.P. Val di Mazara” from the 2006 harvest onwards. Our current stock is from the 2015 harvest. Made with Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Nocellara olives. The Nocellara olives are large in size and the oil they produce has very typical and recognisable organoleptic characteristics. Cerasuola and Biancolilla complete and refine the characteristics of the main variety.
The olives are handpicked while still green, about fifteen days ahead of the normal harvest, which reduces yield but favours the organoleptic characteristics of the oil. They are handpicked and cold pressed to achieve the highest quality olive oil.
Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery in Sicily has in a relatively short space of time established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy. The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily – an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater – makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Run by cousins Francesca, Alessio and Santi Planeta the estate won the coveted Cantina dell’Anno (Italian winery of the year award) in 1999 and has gone from strength to strength in the intervening years.
