Montes Folly is a rich, concentrated ruby-red in color. The nose presents very intense blueberry and blackberry aromas along with notes of jam and a touch of chocolate. The mouth-filling palate is velvety and robust with fine ripe tannins and a pleasingly long and lingering finish. The grapes for Montes Folly grow on the steepest hillsides of our Finca de Apalta, where the vines have adapted best despite the shallow, poor soils. There they reach a good balance between yields and vegetative expression, resulting in low yields with highly concentrated grapes. The grapes for this vintage of Folly were picked on staggered dates between April 12 and May 8. Following a winter with a good amount of accumulated rainwater, the 2012–2013 season began with normal budbreak during the frost-free spring, although there were two significant and quite unusual rainfalls in December. This ‘first irrigation’ saturated the soil profile and allowed us to postpone the normal irrigation for quite a while. The period between flowering and harvest lasted 2–3 weeks and was responsible for a considerable delay in the harvest, and in fact, some varieties did not reach veraison until February, which is 25 days later than usual. The end of the season was sunnier than usual, which helped the grapes ripen evenly with round tannins, low potential alcohol, and good natural acidity. This enabled us to obtain very fresh wines with a high aromatic expression. The quality of the wines from the 2013 vintage is extraordinary, and we believe that is primarily associated with very good weather for slow ripening. We believe that the 2013 vintage maintains the level of quality that Montes Folly has consistently demonstrated, making it recognized as one of Chile’s best Syrahs.
